Santha Rama Rau was an Indian-born, Western-educated journalist & travel writer who also wrote novels, stories, fictional memoirs, and the stage adaptation of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India."
She wrote Home to India shortly after she graduated from Welesley College, inspired by a trip she made to India when she was 16. Bruce Weber wrote in the New York Times: "Though a youthful book, it immediately established the voice of an educated discoverer — observant, amused, self-deprecating, instructive without being pedantic." $15
